Our team of colorectal surgeons and others members of our clinicial team are experts in the surgical and nonsurgical treatment of problems of the colon, rectum and anus. In addition to full training in general surgery, our colorectal surgeons have completed advanced training in the treatment of colorectal problems, and therefore, play an important role in the effective treatment of patients with colorectal diseases.

We are committed to providing the safest, most patient-focused and effective clinical care. Not only do we specialize in the surgical treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus, including inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and pelvic floor disorders, but we are leaders in the use of advanced laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery, using minimally invasive techniques.

UCSF colorectal surgeons have decades of experience and expertise in the most challenging and complex cases. We are a high volume referral center for the region and routinely handle cases that other institutions turn away either because of their rarity or because the patients suffer from multiple condtions making care technically challenging.

Homepage Research

The Section of Colorectal Surgery is dedicated to researching medical diseases and treatments to ultimately improve the delivery of care to patients. Physicians conduct clinical research to investigate the nature of a disorder or the effectiveness of a type of therapy such as a medical device or drug. In order to learn more about a specific condition, a clinical trial must be conducted. A clinical trial is a research study involving human participants that is carefully developed to evaluate and test a specific treatment strategy. The focus of a trial may be on quality of life, effectiveness of therapy or long-term effects of surgery. All clinical research studies are approved and monitored by the UCSF Committee on Human Research.
